Our Spirituality
“I thirst.”
Sometimes just a simple sentence from the Gospels can call men and women to a higher vocation to serve the Lord. For St. Teresa of Calcutta, it was these two words of Christ, spoken in the throes of death on the Cross. It was clear to her that the thirst of Jesus was for souls and for love, and that her life’s work was to be quenching this painful thirst of our Lord by loving and serving him in the poorest of the poor.
I Thirst Ministry also seeks to quench the thirst of the Lord for souls, by evangelizing and praying with gang members and drug dealers.
Oftentimes, the young people we minister to do not have any understanding or knowledge of the Christian faith. We are starting with a “blank slate” so to speak, where even basic concepts of right and wrong need to be addressed and formed. Therefore, there is a great amount of trust-building and formation necessary in this ministry before all else. The end goal, however, is to help develop a rich interior life in the poor we serve.
Like St. John the Baptist, our hope is that “we might decrease, and that Jesus might increase.” When the love for Jesus begins to take over people’s hearts, that is when the true transformation starts happening, and it is then that people start truly connecting with Heaven.
