Homeless Outreach
by I Thirst Ministry
'When I was hungry you gave me to eat.......
YOU DID IT TO ME'. (Matthew 25)
Kensington is most often associated with our large population of homeless people plagued with addictions to heroin and fentanyl. Each Saturday I Thirst Ministry lovingly and prayerfully prepares a substantial meal and then goes in search of souls. Convinced that each person we encounter in the streets is, "Jesus in His distressing disguise” (quoting Mother Teresa of Calcutta). Our ministry to the homeless goes out each week to seek His face and comfort Him in the streets and alleys that are a modern day Calvary. We go in haste with Our Lady always praying her rosary as we search for souls.
Not only do we share a meal but also a listening ear, an encouraging word and an opportunity to pray with each person who would like prayer. We offer each one a brown scapular or miraculous medal as a sign of Our Lady’s ever-present help
Each Saturday it is truly our privilege to be with Jesus... In a very small way we have the chance to alleviate the passion of the Christ unfolding in the streets of Kensington.…
Here is a typical Saturday Schedule:
Volunteers begin working at 8:30AM As we cook and make sandwiches we are praying the rosary and preparing our hearts to meet the Lord in the streets. By 11:00AM the car is loaded up and we continue our prayerful search for the men and women most in need. We drive through the streets and back alleys. We search underneath tunnels and bridges to find the poorest of the poor. By 1:00PM we are back at the ministry house to unload and clean... Before 2:00PM our Saturday outreach is finished.
